The game starts with a letter addressed to Mario and Princess Peach that triggers an investigation by the pair. Together they travel to Prism Island. Mario is armed with a paint hammer in this game which he uses to collect awards and solve puzzles.
Mario must do these to defeat Koopalings and other enemies, especially Black Bowser, who mass-produces black paint to paint the world black.
